Continuity Task 1 Evaluation

1. Explain the story of your video.
Our video entails of a man running (Makori) while doing jumps over various objects, then after jumping over the last object he falls flat on his face. The first shot is an extreme close shot of his face while he prepares to run. The second shot is a mid shot from behind him, at the end of the shot he runs away from the camera. The next shot is a close shot of him jumping over a light. The shot after that is a mid shot of him land after the jump and running towards the camera. Then there is a master shot of him falling over the last light. The last shot is a high shot of him on the floor, in pain.

2. How did you attempt to create narrative flow.
We used quick cuts to create a sort of dramatic effect in order to create narrative flow. We used low camera angles through out the video in order to create dramatic effect and throw the viewer into the action. We aimed to achieve continuity by finding various matches on action.

3. Did you achieve continuity? If not, why?
We did not achieve continuity, this was mainly because we failed to get a match on action between all the different shots. He jumps over the first light twice has shot 4 and 5 overlap. Also, there is a gap between the last two shots.

4. In hindsight, what would you do differently?
I would have finished shot 4 earlier and started shot 5 slightly later to get rid of the delay. Also, I would have ended the penultimate shot later so there would have been a match of action on the last to shots.

TV Drama Still Photo Analysis

https://goo.gl/images/wWskrd - (Link to Image)

This image is from the popular American TV series Power. It is part of the crime genre and has a very interesting plot with many subplots. In this still photo there are three males walking together. They are all wearing very dark clothing, which is mainly black and grey. This suggests that the characters are trying to keep a low profile and not be seen, this could possibly be due to involvement in unlawful activities such as a murder for example. Therefore, one could infer that this still image links to the genre of crime which is prevalent thought the TV series as a whole.

Two of the characters are walking slightly further forward than the other character who is behind. This could be and example of hierarchy in the show, as the other two could be slightly higher up the food chain. Also one the characters at the front is wearing a large chain, this element of costume fits the genre of crime which runs through out the series. Also his chain is a lot larger than the chain of the character in the back, this again suggests that the character in the back is slightly lower down the hierarchy in the show.

TV Drama Still - Reflections on Practical

Before we began work we had become familiar with our brief which was to create still images based on a series of TV drama. As a group we decided to choose the theme of crime. This was mainly because it was feasible to create the scenes we needed for our photos, unlike other themes which were unlikely to be created in a school environment, due lack of props and the fact we were merely in a school environment. This ruled out many genres such as Science Fiction and Overseas themes.

We created a storyboard which contains a contains brief sketches of our shots, however there were a few slight differences between our story boards and our actual shots. My shot was in close shot, it mainly consists of a close up on the criminal`s face who is being interrogated by a detective at the scene. They are both sitting at a relatively small rectangular table and the shot was taken from over the shoulder of the detective which mainly focus on the face of the detective. Here the criminal tries to avoid confrontation while limiting the amount of information being delivered to the detective as this would possibly incriminate his friends. This is a typical scene found in many crime based TV dramas.

My aim was to focus the shot on the criminal however still allow the person looking at the image to acknowledge the detective and understand his role. We used a spotlight to put the focus on the criminal, this worked to an extent however it we needed to play around with multiple spotlights in order to get the correct shot. Also we put a soft light on the edge of the detective`s face in order to make him visible in the darkness of the room, which had the lights off.
