TV Drama Still - Reflections on Practical

Before we began work we had become familiar with our brief which was to create still images based on a series of TV drama. As a group we decided to choose the theme of crime. This was mainly because it was feasible to create the scenes we needed for our photos, unlike other themes which were unlikely to be created in a school environment, due lack of props and the fact we were merely in a school environment. This ruled out many genres such as Science Fiction and Overseas themes.

We created a storyboard which contains a contains brief sketches of our shots, however there were a few slight differences between our story boards and our actual shots. My shot was in close shot, it mainly consists of a close up on the criminal`s face who is being interrogated by a detective at the scene. They are both sitting at a relatively small rectangular table and the shot was taken from over the shoulder of the detective which mainly focus on the face of the detective. Here the criminal tries to avoid confrontation while limiting the amount of information being delivered to the detective as this would possibly incriminate his friends. This is a typical scene found in many crime based TV dramas.

My aim was to focus the shot on the criminal however still allow the person looking at the image to acknowledge the detective and understand his role. We used a spotlight to put the focus on the criminal, this worked to an extent however it we needed to play around with multiple spotlights in order to get the correct shot. Also we put a soft light on the edge of the detective`s face in order to make him visible in the darkness of the room, which had the lights off.
